Facebook Changes its Name to Meta
At the end of October, Mark Zuckerberg announced that he will be rebranding Facebook as Meta, effective immediately.
Zuckerberg said, “We just announced that we’re making a fundamental change to our company. We’re now looking at and reporting on our business as two different segments: one for our family of apps and one for our work on future platforms.”
The “family of apps” is referred to as being part of the metaverse. The metaverse is a combination of social media platforms as well as online realities. In short, the metaverse is the internet in its entirety.
Facebook is not the only app that is a part of this rebranding. This rebranding includes Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and more. Instagram now says “from Meta” when you first open the app. This change is happening now.
There has been a lot of talk about why Facebook would want to change its name after being around for so long. Many believe it is because Zuckerberg wants a fresh start for Facebook.
Facebook has been under fire for the past few years; the main issue being privacy. Facebook was selling people’s data to third party users. People had no idea just how much of their information was being collected by Facebook.
Changing Facebook’s name to Meta could be the fresh start that Zuckerberg is hoping for, or it could just be a good way to waste millions of dollars. Time will tell.
