Over this past weekend Audra Weathers, a Senior Music student had her senior recital, at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Fort Smith. It is one of the last things they do before they graduate to show what they have learned over the course of their college career. Weathers songs ranged from arias to even a surprise performance with Dr. Elizabeth Momand as her final piece of the evening.
The First Presbyterian Church was established back in the 1840s. They have just recently celebrated 181 years of history. It has opened its doors to the Music program at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith letting them perform there. An amazing thing about this Church is that on their Who We Are tab they have 3 philosophies that they emphasize on. With their second philosophy on emphasizing on Music, which can be shown by how they let music students perform there.
After her concert she answered a few questions about her senior recital and what inspired her.
How long did it take you to prepare for your senior recital?
Audra: It took me around a year to prepare!
Why did you choose the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith?
Audra: It was because of the faculty, they felt like they were genuine. They were transparent with the situations that happened in their music program at the time I auditioned. It also was the place where I felt at home, too
Who was your first inspiration to pursue classical/opera music?
Audra: When I got 3rd at the NATS Southern Regional competition in the fall of 2019 with Nazimova's Aria from The Dream of Valentino, by Dominick Argento.
What made you decide to stay in the music program?
Audra: The summer after my sophomore year I was invited to go to Boston for professional theatre, and that sealed the deal. I knew without a doubt that performing was my passion and something that I wanted to pursue.
Weathers has been a part of the UAFS Leonis Chamber Singers since August of 2017 and ever since has flourished in her music journey. She will graduate this Fall 2021 on December 18th at the 10 o’clock ceremony. Weathers will also be singing the National Anthem and the Alma Mater at both of the ceremonies.
Even if you miss her senior recital there is still a live stream of it on the UAFS Music Facebook page.
