Thursday, February 23 – Opening this Thursday in the Lovebreed Auditorium, the UAFS Theatre Program will be showing their musical debut ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’. The show will run Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:00 pm every night.
There is a family-friendly version playing the following week Thursday, March 3rd; Friday, March 4th; Saturday, March 5th at 7:00 pm each night at the same location on campus.
This comedy musical, created by Rachel Sheinkin, is set in a fictional area about an eclectic group of sixth-graders eager to win this season’s challenge for different reasons hosted by equally quirky spelling judges. The show is interactive with audience members where they will be able to participate in the spelling bee itself, and in the original version that will be shown first, includes vulgarities that aren’t recommended for the entire family.
In efforts to revive musical theatre at UAFS after a decade-long hiatus for the program, show director Sally Story has said, "Like most projects, I’m learning a ton about the process. I am super thankful to have this awesome cast and production team”. The show production had a brief pause due to the inclement weather earlier this semester but the show remains on time for public viewing with cast member Shayla Woolsey saying, “Everyone has worked so hard and rehearsals have consistently been so fun. I can’t wait to see what the show is like when we finally open!”.
