Your Vote, Your City: What UAFS Students Should Know Before Election Day

By: Lily Kate Hobbs
With Election Day approaching November 3rd, you have an opportunity to help shape the future of Fort Smith by voting in local elections. Whether you plan to stay in the River Valley after graduation or are here while earning your degree, the decisions made by local leaders can affect the community where you live, work and go to school.
Between classes, work and other responsibilities, it can be easy to put voting on the back burner. But local elections affect more than city government. They help determine who makes decisions about the community you are part of and the issues that affect your everyday life.
This year's election includes a race for Fort Smith mayor and a proposal to change the city's form of government. These decisions could influence how the city is led, how local government operates and how community needs are addressed in the years ahead.
If you are unsure who to vote for, start by learning about the candidates. The Lion's Chronicle has published candidate profiles that explain candidates' backgrounds, priorities and positions on issues affecting Fort Smith. You can visit The Lion's Chronicle's news page
to read the profiles and learn more about the people running for local office.
Taking time to research the candidates can help you feel more confident when you head to the polls. Consider which issues matter most to you, compare the candidates' positions and decide who best represents your priorities. You do not have to know everything about local politics to participate, but taking the time to learn about your choices can help you make an informed decision.
Even if you are new to Fort Smith or do not plan to stay after graduation, local elections still matter while you are here. The decisions local leaders make can affect your experience as a student and the community you call home during your time at UAFS.
Early voting continues through November 2nd, giving you the opportunity to cast your ballot before Election Day on November 3rd. You can find information about voter registration, voting locations and sample ballots through the Arkansas Secretary of State's voter information website.
As Election Day approaches, take time to learn about the candidates and the issues on your ballot. Make a plan to vote if you are eligible, and encourage your friends and classmates to do the same. Your time at UAFS is part of the Fort Smith community, and voting gives you a chance to have a say in its future.
