Dr. Timothy Workman, director of choral activities at UAFS, smiled as the audience cheered for the combined chorus of A Grand Night for Singing. On Tuesday, April 22nd, the choral ensembles of UAFS, Southside, Northside, and Alma High School put on a concert that showcased their works to the audience of the ArcBest Performing Arts Center. It has become a tradition for the UAFS Music & Theatre Department to hold this concert every Spring semester.

Along with taking pride in the music shared, the Leonis Chamber Singers chorus performed great works that the director chose. Mel Mosel, a Chamber Singers member and Music Education Major, expressed many thoughts about A Grand Night for Singing. One of the choral selections his chorus performed was by the famous Eric Whitacre.

“Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine was a difficult piece, but we put a lot of work into it. It was cool seeing it come to life. I could tell that it made Dr. Workman proud, and that he was happy.”

Dr. Workman directed the Leonis Chamber Singers, Women’s Chorus, Men’s Chorus, and a large ensemble of the UAFS choirs and the high school choirs that took part in A Grand Night for Singing. Dr. Workman arranged the song that they all sang together: You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Mel Mosel once again shared their thoughts.

“Singing as a combined choir was a lot of fun! It was cool getting to see the high schoolers interact with us and look up to us. Anytime I work with people younger than me it makes me happy because that’s my future!”

“Grand Night is a really good opportunity for us to showcase how much progress we’ve made as a group. It also gives some attention towards the Music Department. I think that’s important, because is gives high school students a chance to see where they can go to college. Their parents, friends, and teachers are there; it brings the community together.”

“Most importantly, having fun and enjoying what we’re doing is number one!”
