On February 21st, the Filipino Student Association hosted a karaoke night in Baldor 101 for students to share in good food and music.
Students began to gather at 5:30, and they were quick to form a list for the karaoke lineup. The décor was Valentine's Day themed, including rose petals, a photo backdrop, and heart-shaped sunglasses provided for attendees at the door.
The singing began at 6, and the song genres varied wildly. From early 2000s pop hits to Broadway music, from K-Pop to Spanish songs, every performance was met with cheering and enthusiasm. Several more popular songs resulted in the entire crowd joining in to sing.

The singing paused at 6:30 for a dinner break, where everyone enjoyed some Filipino food. Options included Palabok, a chicken and noodle dish with vegetables, and Sisig, a pork dish. There was plenty of food for everyone, and many people went back for seconds.
The second round of singing included a lot of hit songs, and nearly everyone jumped up to dance to “That’s What I Like” by Bruno Mars, “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley, and other popular party music. One student showed off his ability to do the worm.
As the night began to come to a close, emcee Anthony Alfaro had to announce that the sign up list was closed to prevent the night from going past the planned ending of 9 pm. He assured everyone that another karaoke night was in the works for next semester, and there would be plenty of opportunities for people to show up and show out.
The night was a smashing success, providing a great opportunity for students to enjoy one another’s company, good food, and music spanning across cultures. The way everyone came together to share in their love for music, despite the wide variety of genres, was incredible to watch. The future karaoke nights are sure to be events students won’t want to miss.
