Spirit Squads dance back onto the court post-covid

Updated: Jan 12, 2022

Last school year brought on many challenges, including the struggle of safely holding sports events. Now that the UAFS Lions are back in action this year, fans are ready to support their favorite team. Attending a Lions basketball game in Stubblefield Center is an inviting event filled with Lion pride. This school spirit is backed heavily by the UAFS cheer team and pom squad. Due to covid restrictions last season, spirit squads were not allowed to step foot onto the court. Now the teams are excited to be back on the court, cheering on the Lions.

Members of the UAFS spirit squads truly exemplify what it means to be a Lion. They serve as ambassadors for the university on and off the court. During games, you can see the teams being crowd leaders and spirit raisers, but their jobs do not end there. These student-athletes are expected to exude Lion Pride in all aspects of life. Whether it’s being a motivated student in class or leading as an example for their peers, members of these teams are always representing UAFS. Being a productive member of the community comes along with joining a UAFS spirit squad.

Many events for the UAFS spirit squads got canceled due to covid restrictions this past season. Emma Patrick, a second-year pom squad member, said last year was a difficult season for the team. “It was hard for the team to see the light at the end of the tunnel because we didn’t know when we would be able to get back on the court,” says Patrick. However, the team isn't struggling to get back into the swing of things. According to Patrick, “the team looks better than ever and I can’t wait for everyone to see what we’re capable of.” Both teams not only have experience with competing at the National level but also with bringing home championships. With hopes to return to nationals this year, we wish our spirit squads the best of luck in each of their competitions.

So far, both the Cheer Team and Pom Squad have proved themselves as crucial components of the UAFS family. They always keep the school spirit alive at the basketball games, no matter the circumstance. This spirit and dedication deserve to be recognized. Both teams' performances and entertainment have been amazing so far and the community is looking forward to how they will progress throughout the season.
