UAFS basketball teams end season in a whimper

Both men’s and women’s basketball teams made first-round exits today. Lady Lions lost against Lubbock Christian 67-84 and the Lions lost to the St. Edward's Hilltoppers 59-68.

From the starting whistle, things just couldn’t seem to go right for the Lions. They found themselves in a 19-2 hole early in the first half and would struggle to keep pace with the overwhelming Hilltopper offense.

The Hilltoppers dominated the paint, outscoring the Lions 42-14. The Hilltoppers brought a type of ferocity and aggressiveness that the Lions could not match. The Lions picked up 2 offensive rebounds to the Hilltoppers 11. The team at times seemed like they didn’t want to touch the ball.

A highlight in the otherwise miserable night for the Lions was redshirt freshman Drew Miller, who put together 14 points off four threes. Performances like his are going to be crucial moving forward, as the Lions seek to replace their crucial seniors leaving this year.

Over at Lubbock, the bottom seeded Lady Lions would take on the 5th seed Chaparrals.

The Lions would make occasional attempts at closing the gap in scoring, but the Chaparrals would continue to outpace the opposing offense. Outside of a brief 2 point lead early in the first quarter, Lubbock Christian would hold the lead for much of the game, going up by as many as 22. The Chaparrals’ Allie Schulte led the charge racking up 17 points off three triples followed closely behind by Ashton Duncan who went 5-6 from beyond the arc.

As the Lions are left to reflect on the season and what’s to come ahead, the Hilltoppers are set to take on #1 Lubbock Christian in Frisco Thursday, and the Chaparrals will take on the #4 Angelo State Rams.
