On Wednesday, April 12th, the Residence Hall Association (RHA) at the University of Arkansas in Fort Smith hosted the “You Booze, You Lose” event to raise alcohol safety awareness for university students.
The event was a lively attraction for university staff and students alike, offering snow cones, mocktails, and goodie bags to all who stopped by. The most enticing activity was the ginormous blow-up race course set up on the campus green, where participants put on “drunk goggles” (provided by UPD) and raced through the blowup obstacle course in blow up hamster balls.
Those who participated in the hamster-ball race say that the experience put into perspective the danger of alcohol abuse. Two staff members who raced, Maddie Hardwick and Mattilyn Sellers, explain that the dizzy sensation provided by the goggles and the hamster ball is very comparable to that of having too much to drink, making the completion of the obstacle course a difficult task and providing a glimpse into the danger of excessive alcohol consumption.
Cole Wright, RHA marketing manager and co-creator of this event, hopes that this fun activity is a way to encourage students to stay safe around alcohol.
